This Thursday, Ženergija welcomes Katia Ledoux — French mezzo-soprano, feminist and activist, whose powerful voice challenges conventions both on and beyond the opera stage.
Who gets to belong in opera? Who gets to be seen, heard and celebrated on its stages — and who has historically been excluded?
My guest is Katia Ledoux, a French mezzo-soprano who grew up in Vienna and has performed on some of Europe’s major opera stages. A member of the Volksoper Wien ensemble, she has taken on roles ranging from Carmen and Prince Orlofsky to contemporary opera, while also speaking publicly about racism, Black identity, representation and discrimination within the opera world.
In this episode of Ženergija, we talk about voice and power, Black identity, feminism, bodies on the opera stage, representation and what it means to inhabit institutions historically shaped by very particular ideas of who belongs.
Can opera change without changing who gets to occupy its stages? What happens when bodies and voices that were pushed to the margins take centre stage? And can one of Europe's most traditional art forms become a space for resistance, transformation and joy?
