Radio Basics Course

A compact, hands-on introduction to radio production

  • 07.02. and 08.02.2026 from 10:00-18:00 at the Radio ORANGE 94.0, Klosterneuburger Straße 1, 1200 Wien
  • 11.02. and 13.02.2026 from 17:00-20:00 Online via Zoom

This compact, hands-on course gives you a solid entry into making radio where you’ll learn the essential skills to produce your own radio show or podcast.

The course is open to everyone—no prior experience needed. After completing it, you can decide whether you’d like to develop a concept for your own show or join an existing editorial team.

The course takes place over four days (22h): two days on site at the radio station and two online via Zoom. You’ll work with recording techniques, audio editing using Audacity, live broadcasting, and how to shape stories with voices, music, and atmosphere—alongside essential media ethics and copyright law.

Part 1: Introduction Day (7 February, 10:00-18:00 | Radio ORANGE)

After a quick overview of what community radio is all about, we jump straight into recording techniques, which are practiced through fun, practical exercises.

We’ll cover different radio elements like interviews, short surveys, and mini-reports. In the second part of the day, the recordings are edited into a simple first version using the free, open-source program Audacity.

Part 2: Audio Production and Live Radio (8 February, 10:00-18:00 | Radio ORANGE)

We continue building on the momentum from the first day and deepen our Audacity skills. You’ll learn more about sound design and storytelling, and we’ll practice these techniques using a sample topic and existing audio material. We’ll also discuss key community radio topics like including multilingual content and using inclusive, non-discriminatory language.

The live studio is the beating heart of community radio. Through hands-on exercises, we’ll get a feel for live broadcasting. In small groups, you’ll plan and run a short live show — juggling the mic, music, and computer while also managing callers or studio guests. It’s a challenge, but with practice it becomes really fun.

Part 3: Media and Copyright Law (11 February and 13 February, 17:00-20:00 | ONLINE)

We’ll look at the basics of media and copyright law and use them as a starting point to discuss media ethics and the guidelines of ORANGE 94.0. How much freedom do we have as independent media makers?

This online workshop is split into two sessions (each 3 hours including breaks) and gives you the legal and ethical tools you need to produce radio shows and related web content.

Goal:
Participants will gain a solid understanding of media and copyright law, plus the confidence to assess and solve legal and ethical questions that come up in everyday radio work. These skills are especially important today, when many social media users are also acting as media creators and publishers.

The workshop is delivered via Zoom, combining short lectures, discussions, practical exercises, and examples using audio, images, and text to make the topics clear and engaging.
