SIMULATIONS: space exploration preparations on earth

Interview with Diego Urbina who was one of the simulation astronauts in the Mars 500 study about his experience working in simulations and being a simulation astronaut.

Diego Urbina is of Italian and Columbian nationality and holds two master degrees, one in Electronics Engineering from the Politecnico di Torino, in Turin, Italy and a master’s degree in Space Studies from the International Space University, in Strasbourg, France.

Before being selected as a crewmember to the Mars simulation at the Institute of Biomedical Problems in Moscow for 1.5 years, he gained experience at the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah, USA in January 2010, where he researched the growth of tropical plants and spacesuit constraints. Most recently he was the lead engineer for the Belgium space company Space Applications Services for project MOONWALK. There, he also served as simulation astronaut in the 2-week Mars simulations. They were conducted in April 2016 in Rio Tinto in the south of Spain.
